Malta's festivals: the big summer dates and when to book

Malta packs a disproportionate number of festivals into four summer months for an island its size, and they do not all target the same crowd. Some fill the island and double accommodation prices, others go almost unnoticed by visitors. Here are the ones that change something about a trip.

The big electronic festivals

This is what pulls the most people from abroad. Several electronic music events run between June and September, often across several days and in open-air settings, with international headliners. When one lands, the whole island fills: flights climb, accommodation doubles, and the Paceville clubs run at maximum because the crowd stays on afterwards. If your trip falls then, book everything well ahead or shift by a week.

Village feasts, the other Malta

Every Maltese village has its festa, in honour of its patron saint, between June and September. For three or four days the streets are decorated, the churches lit, there are brass bands, food stalls and fireworks at midnight. It is not a show put on for tourists, it is the island's social life, and entry is free. If you come across one, go: it is the exact opposite of a night in Paceville and it is worth the detour.

Fireworks, a local speciality

Malta is among the world's biggest producers of fireworks per head, and the villages compete in earnest. The international fireworks festival, in late April, draws teams from several countries. Through the summer there are displays almost every weekend somewhere on the island, often visible from Sliema or the Grand Harbour.

Classical and jazz

Valletta hosts classical music festivals and a well-regarded jazz festival, usually in July, in venues that are half the appeal: forts, bastions, a baroque theatre. It will not be for every group, but it is an alternative evening when part of the group has had enough of clubs.

What it changes in practice

Three things. Accommodation prices, which can double on the big festival dates. Availability, with flights filling weeks ahead. And the atmosphere in the clubs, which benefit from the festival crowd: the nights after a big event are often the best of the season in Paceville.

How to plan around it

Exact dates shift year to year and are announced in spring. The simple rule: if your travel dates are fixed, check what falls during your stay before you book. If you can pick the dates, aiming for the week after a big festival gives you full clubs without peak prices.
