Punta Cana nightlife: Coco Bongo, Imagine and the Dominican night
Punta Cana happens outside the all-inclusive wristband. The Dominican night has its own rules: a show rather than just a club, merengue and bachata alongside reggaeton, and venues that do not really open until 1 am.

Coco Bongo, the show
This is not a nightclub in the usual sense: acrobats, aerial acts, film scenes recreated, all between DJ sets. The ticket includes open bar, which explains the price. You go for the show as much as the dancing, and it is the first thing groups book.
Imagine, the club in a cave
Imagine Punta Cana sits inside a natural cave, with separate rooms and separate moods: one for reggaeton and Latin, another for electronic and international hits. Shuttles from the Bávaro hotels are included in most tickets.
Bávaro and the local night
Outside the resorts, Bávaro and El Cortecito hold the beach bars, terraces and the nights Dominicans actually go to. That is where you hear merengue and bachata rather than airport hits, and it costs far less.
Budget and getting around
Around 60 to 100 dollars for Coco Bongo with open bar, 30 to 60 for Imagine with transport, and much less in the Bávaro bars. Taxis do not run on a meter, agree the fare before getting in. Distances are real: a hotel in Uvero Alto is 45 minutes from the clubs.
Which month to pick
December to April is the dry season and the high season: clubs are full, so are flight prices. May to October brings short late-afternoon showers, hotels drop noticeably and the nights run exactly as they do the rest of the year. September and October are the quietest months, and the riskiest for hurricanes.

What people ask us
Can you go out in Punta Cana without leaving the resort?+
The big hotels have their own disco, but it feels like the resort. The real nights are in Bávaro and along the Cortecito road, fifteen to thirty minutes away depending on the hotel.
When is the best time to go?+
High season runs December to April, with the driest weather. The rainy season is May to October, but showers are short and the clubs run all year.
Coco Bongo or Imagine?+
Coco Bongo is a show with open bar, pricier and tightly run. Imagine is a club in a cave setting, where you go to dance. Plenty of people do both across a week.
What time does the night start?+
Late. Bars fill around 11 pm, clubs around 1 am, and it ends at sunrise. A late dinner is part of the rhythm.
Is going out in Punta Cana safe?+
Yes in the Bávaro tourist area and along the club road, which is busy and watched. The precautions are the ones you would take anywhere: agree the taxi fare in advance rather than taking an unknown car, keep your things on you, and do not wander alone away from lit roads.
