Zante nightlife: the Laganas strip, hour by hour
Zante fits into one street. Two kilometres in Laganas, around thirty bars and clubs pressed together, and a reputation that pulls British students across Europe every summer. It is the most concentrated destination on this list: you never take a taxi all night, and that is the whole argument.
The strip, and nothing else
Laganas Strip runs two kilometres and holds most of the island's nightlife. Cocktail bars, clubs, terraces and promoters handing out discount cards on the pavement. You go in, you come out, you go in somewhere else. Entry is very often free before a certain hour, and that is how the model works: clubs make their money on drinks, not on the door.
How a night runs
Nothing starts before eleven. Bars fill between eleven and one, clubs take over from one, and the peak sits between two and four. Many close around five or six, and a handful hold out until sunrise. Arriving on the Strip at ten means walking down an empty street.
Bar crawls, the dominant format
This is Zante's particularity. Organised crawls take in four or five venues across the night, with a drink included at each stop and a single ticket. Expect twenty to thirty euros. For a group arriving cold and knowing nobody, it is the fastest way to meet people and read the street in one night. For a group that already knows where it is going, it costs more than doing the round yourself.
What it actually costs
A beer is around four or five euros on the Strip, a cocktail six to ten. Entry is often free or nominal. A full night comes to twenty-five or forty euros a head, which puts Zante between Albania and Malta. Prices climb noticeably in August, and the discount cards handed out on the pavement are not a gimmick: they are often worth a free drink.
The daytime, which matters more than you would think
Laganas beach is vast but shallow and very busy. Zante's real draw is elsewhere: Shipwreck Bay, reachable only by boat, and the Blue Caves in the north. Excursions leave in the morning and return late afternoon, which leaves the whole evening. Plenty of groups alternate a boat day with a recovery day, because seven straight nights on the Strip does not hold.
The turtles, and the rule people miss
Laganas Bay is a protected nesting area for loggerhead turtles. Navigation is regulated, some beaches close at night between May and October, and boat traffic is limited across several sectors. This is not trivia: fines exist, and serious operators respect the zones. Check that your provider is licensed.
